Super sweet kernels with golden yellow color. Remains sweet for 2-3 days after harvest.
Preparation
Sweet corn needs isolation from other corn varieties. If planted near field corn or popcorn, cross-pollination will turn the sweet kernels starchy and tough. Separate by at least 100 meters or plant so they bloom at different times.
How to Grow Sweet Corn
- Materials: Fertilizer, water.
- Method: Direct sow in blocks, 2-3cm deep, spaced 25cm apart.Corn is a grass and needs plenty of nitrogen. Fertilize when plants are 30cm tall and again when tassels appear. Keep weed-free so the shallow roots don't compete for nutrients.
How to Harvest
- Harvest in 70-75 days during the "milk stage." This is sooner than field corn.
- The silks should be brown, and kernels should be plump and release milky juice.
- Sugar content is highest in the early morning, so harvest then.
Common Problems
- Corn Earworm attacks the tip of the ear. You can apply a drop of vegetable oil to the silks once they start to brown to suffocate the worms.
