Strong aroma and bright red color. Specially bred to resist bulb rot during the wet season.
Preparation
Shallots prefer a sunny, open site with loose, well-drained soil. They hate heavy, wet soil which causes bulb rot. Raise the beds if your garden has drainage issues.
How to Grow Shallots
- Materials: Garden fork, general-purpose fertilizer.
- Method: Sow seeds directly into finely prepared soil, 0.5cm deep. Space rows 20cm apart. Thin seedlings to 10cm apart.Shallots have shallow roots, so weed carefully by hand to avoid damaging them. Water regularly during dry spells, but stop watering once the bulbs have formed and the leaves begin to yellow.
How to Harvest
- Harvest in 60-65 days when the tops turn yellow and fall over naturally.
- Pull the bulbs and let them cure (dry) in a warm, airy, shaded place for a week.
- Once dry, clip the roots and tops for storage.
Common Problems
- Purple Blotch causes purple lesions on leaves.
- Bulb Rot occurs in waterlogged soil. "Red Baron" is bred for rain tolerance, but proper drainage is the best prevention.
