Preparation
Pumpkins are heavy feeders and drinkers. Dig a hole and fill it with aged manure or compost before planting. They need full sun and plenty of space for vines to run.
How to Grow Pumpkin
- Materials: Manure, shovel.
- Method: Sow 2-3 seeds per hill, 2-3cm deep. Space hills 1.5 - 2 meters apart.Water at the base to keep leaves dry. When the fruit starts to form, slip a board or shingle under it to prevent contact with the soil. Prune the vine tips after a few fruits have set to direct energy into sizing them up.
How to Harvest
- Harvest in 85-90 days.
- The pumpkin is ripe when the rind is hard (your fingernail shouldn't dent it) and the stem turns woody.
- Leave a few inches of stem attached to extend storage life.
Common Problems
- Fruit Fly can damage young fruit.
- Powdery Mildew is common late in the season; remove infected leaves to improve airflow.
