Preparation
Papaya is a tropical plant that loves sun but hates "wet feet." Even 48 hours of standing water can kill it. Choose the highest point in your garden or build a large mound.
How to Grow Papaya
- Materials: Polybags, organic fertilizer.
- Method:Direct sow or start in polybags. Plant seeds 1cm deep. Space plants 2 meters apart.Papayas are heavy feeders. Apply small amounts of fertilizer frequently (every 2 weeks). Calina Gold is a dwarf variety, making it easier to manage, but ensure the soil remains moist but never soggy.
How to Harvest
- Harvest starts 7-8 months after planting.
- Pick fruits when the skin color changes from dark green to having streaks of yellow (20-30% yellow).
- They will ripen fully off the tree.
Common Problems
- Root Rot is the biggest killer; ensure drainage.
- Mealybugs can cluster on fruit and stems; wash them off with a strong jet of water or use insecticidal soap.
