Golden-skinned melon with exceptionally sweet green flesh (Brix 14-16%). Quick harvest cycle.
Preparation
Melons need warm soil and plenty of space to sprawl. Prepare "hills" or mounds of soil mixed with compost. This raised planting method improves drainage and warms the soil faster, which melons love.
How to Grow Melon
- Materials: Black plastic mulch (optional), straw, balanced fertilizer.
- Method: Sow seeds directly into the mounds, 1-2cm deep. Space plants 60-80cm apart. If transplanting, handle roots very carefully. To get sweeter fruit, pinch off the tip of the main vine after it develops 5-6 leaves to encourage side shoots. Place a piece of wood or a bed of straw under the developing fruits to keep them off the damp soil, preventing rot and insect damage.
How to Harvest
- Harvest in 60-65 days.
- Signs of ripeness include a sweet aroma at the blossom end and the stem starting to crack or slip easily from the fruit.
- Reduce watering one week before harvest to concentrate the sugars.
Common Problems
- Powdery Mildew looks like white flour dusted on the leaves. It thrives in humid conditions. Water at the base of the plant only, avoiding the leaves. Use a milk-water spray or sulfur fungicide if infection occurs.
