Prolific pods up to 70cm long. Slow seed development ensures pods stay tender longer.
Preparation
These beans are vigorous climbers. You must set up a trellis, teepee, or fence before seeding so you don't disturb roots later. They thrive in hot, humid weather.
How to Grow Long Bean
- Materials: Tall poles or netting, twine.
- Method: Direct sow 2-3cm deep, spaced 30cm apart along your trellis.Train young vines onto the support. Unlike other crops, long beans fix their own nitrogen, so avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers which cause all leaves and no beans. Keep soil moist for tender pods.
How to Harvest
- Ready in 40-45 days.
- Harvest pods when they are pencil-thin and flexible.
- If the seeds bulge inside, the pod will be tough.
- Harvest daily to keep the plant producing.
Common Problems
- Aphids love the tender tips of bean vines. Spray with water or neem oil.
- Bean Fly maggots can tunnel into stems of seedlings; cover young plants with fleece.
