A premium hybrid corn variety designed for maximum biomass. Excellent drought tolerance.
Preparation
Corn requires a position with full, direct sunlight and shelter from strong winds, as the tall stalks can easily be knocked over. Soil should be prepared well in advance by digging in plenty of organic matter or aged manure. Because corn is wind-pollinated, it is best planted in blocks (squares) of at least 4 rows rather than a single long row to ensure kernels fill out completely.
How to Grow Hybrid Corn
- Materials: Garden hoe, compost, balanced fertilizer (NPK), and irrigation system.
- Method: Sow seeds directly into the soil once the danger of frost has passed and soil is warm. Plant seeds 2-3cm deep. Space plants 20-25cm apart, with 70-75cm between rows. Water the seeds in well.Keep the soil consistently moist, especially when the tassels (tops) and silks (ears) appear. This is the critical pollination period; water stress now will result in poor kernel development. Apply a nitrogen-rich fertilizer when plants are knee-high.
How to Harvest
- Corn is ready to harvest in approximately 95-100 days.
- The ears are ready when the silks turn dark brown and dry out.
- To test, peel back a small section of husk and puncture a kernel with your thumbnail; if milky liquid squirts out, it is ready.
- Twist the ear downward to snap it off the stalk.
Common Problems
- Downy Mildew can appear as yellow streaks on leaves and gray fuzzy growth. To prevent this, ensure wide spacing for airflow and avoid overhead watering in the evening.
- Rust appears as orange pustules on leaves; rotate crops annually to reduce risk.
