Preparation
Eggplants love heat even more than tomatoes. They require a long, warm season and warm soil to thrive. Do not rush to plant them out until the weather is settled and warm.
How to Grow Eggplant
- Materials: Stakes, liquid feed, mulch.
- Method: Start seeds in trays as they need heat (25-30°C) to germinate. Transplant to the field after 5-6 weeks. Bury seeds 0.5cm deep. Space plants 60cm apart.Stake the plants early. As the heavy fruit develops, the branches can break without support. Feed with a liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks once the first fruit has set.
How to Harvest
- Ready in 50-55 days. Harvest when the skin is glossy and shiny.
- If the skin turns dull, the fruit is over-ripe and the seeds inside will be brown and bitter.
- Cut the tough stem with shears.
Common Problems
- Bacterial Wilt is a common threat. Ensure crop rotation.
- Fruit Borer caterpillars can tunnel into the fruit; inspect under leaves for eggs and remove them.
