High starch content variety designed for industrial tapioca production. Extremely hardy in poor soils.
Preparation
Cassava is incredibly hardy and tolerates drought and poor soil, though it prefers loose, sandy loam. It requires a frost-free climate
How to Grow Cassave
- Materials: Stem cuttings (stakes), hoe.
- Method: Cassava is grown from stem cuttings, not seeds. Plant cuttings 10-15cm deep, either vertically or slanted. Space plants 80cm x 100cm. Keep weed-free for the first 3 months. Once the canopy closes, the plant requires very little care. It is drought tolerant once established.
How to Harvest
- Tubers are ready 8-10 months after planting
- Cut the main stem a few inches above the ground, loosen the soil with a fork, and pull the tubers up by the remaining stem stub
Common Problems
- Mealybugs can attack the growing tip, causing "bunchy top."
- Root Rot occurs in waterlogged soils. "Tapioca Pro" is bred for hardiness, but good drainage is essential.
